FIRST ALERT: Major 2-day snowstorm set to blast New England starting Sunday

An arctic front moved though Friday night and plunged our temperatures into the single digits across southern New England. Wind chills are between -10 and -25 degrees too.

The gusty wind remains through the day Saturday, relaxing overnight as temps stay 5-14 degrees today and tonight. This cold sets the stage for fluffy snowfall for most on Sunday and Monday. The cold temps remain through next week too with highs in the 20s.

Snowstorm timing

Sunday morning the snow slowly heads in from the south and west. This light and fluffy snow picks up by midday and arrives in Boston. The south coast will see snow rates of 1 inch per hour by late morning. Snow rates in Boston will be 1 to maybe 3 inches per hour from 3 p.m. to possibly 11p.m.

The low pressure system is tracking slightly more north as of Saturday morning guidance. This means more sleet contamination as warmer air nudges in aloft and an onshore ocean wind adds some warmth too. A coastal front sets up around Boston, southeastern Massachusetts and across Cape Cod. It will be a game-time decision where this will set up and can make the difference between one town getting 12 inches versus 20-plus inches…
