Immediate Electricity Conservation Urged to Prevent Emergency Power Interruptions

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEVV) — Electric cooperatives across central and southern Indiana and southeastern Illinois are urging residents to immediately reduce electricity use as the region faces a serious power supply emergency driven by extremely high demand and tight power availability across the Midwest.

Officials with Hoosier Energy, along with other electric cooperatives, warn that without swift, voluntary conservation, temporary emergency service interruptions could occur. Residents and businesses served by local REMCs and RECs are asked to cut back on electricity usage until further notice to help stabilize the regional power grid.

“The public’s cooperation is critical right now,” cooperative representatives said in a joint announcement. “Reducing demand immediately will help ease the strain on the power system and may prevent the need for controlled outages.”…
