List of local warming centers open during winter storm

(WFXR) – Below is a list of local warming shelters that are opening their doors during this weekend’s forecasted winter weather.

Alleghany Highlands

  • Alleghany County – If assistance is needed to reach either of these locations, contact the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office at 540-965-1770 ext. 0.
    • The Clifton Forge Fire Department at 701 Church Street in Clifton Forge will open as a warming station starting on 7a.m. Saturday (Jan. 24) through Tuesday (Jan. 27).
    • The Clifton Forge Volunteer Rescue Squad will also be open as a warming center beginning on 7a.m. on Saturday (Jan. 24) to Tuesday (Jan. 27). At both locations, hours may extend past Tuesday if dangerous weather continues.

Lynchburg and Central Va.

  • Bedford County
    • The SJC Warming Shelter, located at 112 Center Street in Bedford, will be open Friday (Jan. 23) through Monday (Jan. 26). Hours will be from 7p.m. to 7a.m. each evening/night. Hours may be extended into the next week depending on the amount of volunteers and power availability.
    • Palestine Baptist Church at 9244 Smith Mountain Lake Parkway in Huddelston aims to open a shelter Monday morning (Jan. 26), unless the center needs to open earlier.
    • Eastlake Community Church at 1201 Timberwood Lane in Moneta is on standby to open a warming shelter if necessary.
  • Lynchburg
    • The Salvation Army in Lynchburg at 2215 Park Avenue will be open as a 24/7 warming shelter starting Friday evening (Jan. 23). A hot meal will be served daily at 4:30p.m. Donations like bedding, socks and gloves, hygiene items, shelf-stable snacks, and water are needed. New River Valley

  • Galax
    • Elisha’s House, located at 222 Carroll Street in Galax, will be open at 8p.m. from Friday, Jan. 23, to Sunday, Jan. 25. Guests should be adults (at least 18 years old) and should arrive by 8:45p.m. for check-in.
  • Giles County
    • The Giles County Wellness Center at 140 Clendennin Road in Narrows will serve as a warming center from 5:30a.m. to 10p.m on Monday through Thursday (Jan. 26 – 29) and 5:30a.m. to 9p.m. on Friday (Jan. 30).
  • Montgomery County
    • New River Family Shelter is an emergency shelter for families and children experiencing homelessness and needing safe housing. It is based in Christiansburg, but has multiple home sites. Contact 540-382-6188 for availability.
  • Radford
    • To Our House is a winter overnight shelter for adults providing meals and transportation to and from the sight. It is located at 206 Third Avenue in Radford. Call 540-693-3159 before arrival and check-in before 5:30p.m. at the intake center. Due to limited space, calling ahead is recommended.

Roanoke Valley

Southside Va.

  • Danville
    • The Temporary Relief and Counseling Center (TRCC) Warming Shelter at the Redemption Church is now open 24/7, located at 625 Shelton Street in Danville. Day Center services are also available during regular daytime hours. To contact the organization, call 434-710-6126.
  • Henry County and Martinsville – Henry County’s volunteer fire departments will be open as daytime warming locations on Sunday (Jan. 25) and Monday (Jan. 26). Residents can stop by briefly to warm up or charge their devices, but those centers are not intended for overnight use.
    • Bassett Volunteer Fire Department at 3737 Fairystone Park Highway in Bassett
    • Patrick Henry Volunteer Fire Department at 3125 County Line Road in Patrick Springs
    • Collinsville Volunteer Fire Department at 205 John Redd Boulevard in Collinsville
    • Horsepasture Volunteer Fire Department at 17815 A.L. Philpott Highway in Ridgeway
    • Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Department at 641 Main Street in Ridgeway
    • Dyers Store Volunteer Fire Department at 3230 Chatham Road in Martinsville
    • The Henry County Department of Public Safety building will open their doors as a daytime warming center next week, Monday (Jan. 26) through Friday (Jan. 30).
    • The MHC Warming Center at 603 Memorial Boulevard South in Martinsville opens nightly at 7p.m. to 9a.m. (intended for overnight use).
  • Pittsylvania County
    • Gretna Fire and Rescue will open its doors as an emergency warming center starting Saturday (Jan. 24) through Monday (Jan. 26) with hours from 8a.m. to 8p.m. The address is 122 E Gretna Road.
