Jobs don’t stop for extreme cold as essential workers continue across West Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — As dangerously cold temperatures settle across West Michigan, many people are being urged to stay indoors and limit time outside. But for essential workers, the job continues even in arctic conditions.

Utility crews, delivery drivers and other outdoor workers were still on the job this week as temperatures dipped well below freezing.

At Consumers Energy, crews responsible for maintaining electric and natural gas service remained active across the region. Company Spokesperson Brian Wheeler said safety is the top priority for workers who are required to operate outdoors in extreme weather…
