A cold weekend is in store, with significant snow likely for Rochester by Sunday

Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) — Some extremely cold air will remain in place this weekend. And expect some lake effect snow at times as well. As usual, the lake effect snow will impact a few areas, but not all. But by Sunday and Sunday night, a significant snow is likely for much of the area.

For the short term, the cold temperatures and very low wind chill values will be the biggest challenge. Through Friday, the air temperature will drop down through the teens, even despite some sunshine. The wind chill will do the same as well. Expect the wind chill to drop below zero during the morning. And it will continue to fall to closer to -10 by late in the day.

Any persistent bands of lake effect snow during the day on Friday could drop between a trace to 2 inches of snow. Friday night, there will be the potential of another 1-3 inches of snow where the band lines up a little longer, especially for parts of northeastern Monroe County and Wayne County.

Through the day on Sunday, snow will gradually build in during the morning. The snow will pick up in intensity and will become moderate to heavy through the afternoon and into the evening. It’s during this timeframe that the bulk of the accumulation will occur. The early estimate is that many areas will have the potential of seeing close to a foot of snow out of this storm. Keep in mind that this is a preliminary estimate. Lake enhancement, which could increase the intensity of the snow, and also lengthen the duration of snow, will be a factor that we’ll continue to evaluate. This could help to increase some of the snow totals for certain areas…
