Hundreds of thousands of people gathered at the Embarcadero late Saturday afternoon to protest Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the agency’s controversial crackdown in Minneapolis.
The protest, which began at 4 p.m. and drew Californians from as far away as Tracy, came after the shooting death in Minneapolis on Saturday of an American citizen. Alex Jeffrey Pretti, 37, was killed by a federal Border Patrol agent. He was an intensive care nurse at a Veterans Affairs hospital. He had participated in protests following the killing of Minneapolis resident Renee Good by an ICE officer earlier this month. (Border Patrol and ICE are separate agencies within the Department of Homeland Security.)
The protesters held signs saying “Stop pretending your fascism is patriotism,” “ICE=Gestapo” and “Deport the racists.” They walked down Market Street and onto Sansome and were returning to the Embarcadero.
