Traffic around one of Southeast Portland’s most notoriously tight rail crossings ground to a halt Friday morning after a crash involving a train near SE 12th Avenue and SE Clinton Street. The incident was reported around 11:20 a.m., and both police and fire crews responded to the scene.
According to KATU, emergency crews were still working the scene late in the morning and only limited information had been released. KATU noted it first posted about the crash at 11:31 a.m., then quickly updated the developing report as new details trickled in, with more updates promised as officials speak out.
Where it happened
The SE 12th and Clinton rail crossing sits where freight and passenger tracks slice through a dense run of inner-Southeast neighborhoods, popular bike routes and small local businesses. Chronic train blockages and delays at this stretch have been a neighborhood headache for years, and safety worries are not theoretical, as BikePortland has reported.
In November 2025, that outlet reported that an e-scooter rider was killed after colliding with an Amtrak train at a nearby crossing, a deadly reminder of the risks that come with the corridor’s at-grade crossings.
