Guests find Aiken County shelters warm and welcoming

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) – With an ice storm moving in, Aiken County officials wanted to make sure there were warming shelters for those who don’t have adequate heat.

The shelters are:

  • Friendship Baptist Church at 123 Clearmont Drive in Belvedere, which opened at noon Saturday.
  • The Salvation Army at 604 Park Ave. in Aiken.

Also nearby but not in Aiken County is J-E-T Middle School, which is serving as a shelter in Edgefield County. We got to visit the shelter at Friendship Baptist, which was a warm and welcoming place Saturday night.

While many residents worry about losing power, the church opened its doors as an emergency shelter for anyone in need…
