Really cool cloud formations captured by WAVY viewers

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Did you see it? Dozens of WAVY viewers reached out with images and videos Friday afternoon they captured of a cool cloud formation over Hampton Roads.

Super Doppler 10 Chief Meteorologist Jeff Edmondson confirmed these are called Altostratus clouds. These clouds are currently sitting at 12,000 feet in the sky, he said on Friday evening.

The World Meteorological Organization says when viewing an Altostratus cloud from below, it appears flat, then diffuses and becomes hazy. The WMO goes on to explain that some parts of the cloud layer are thin enough that the Sun can be seen shining through…
