Time stops for no man on “the Strip,” but memory does. It hangs like a dead clock on the wall, frozen at the moment you last walked out of your favorite college haunt, whether five years ago or five decades.

Things change. The Cumberland Avenue of yesteryear was a lot of things, but polished was never one of them. Today, flanked by high-rise luxury student apartments and glossy fast-food chains, it feels like a different planet – “a clean canyon of glass and steel,” as Jack Neely described it in his 2023 historical essay “An Elegy to the Strip.” You could say something similar for campus itself, with all its crisp new buildings and robot food-runners whizzing down the sidewalk…
