TxDOT cautions drivers as Austin roads still coated in ice, sleet

After a weekend of subfreezing temperatures and a combination of sleet and ice coating swaths of Central Texas, many Austin-area residents still woke up Monday morning, January 26, to sheets of precipitation caking area highways and roads – prompting the Texas Department of Transportation to continually urge residents to avoid travel.

TxDOT’s Austin District traffic cameras showcased the wintry landscape coating area thoroughfares Monday morning, with many roads in the western portion of the Austin metro reporting slowed traffic as a result of the precipitation paired with the region’s hilly road topography.

Specifically, cameras depicted portions of State Highway 45 in both North Austin and South Austin still coated in precipitation Monday morning, alongside MoPac, the Texas’ capital’s primary north-south corridor on the westside of town.

“TxDOT crews continue treating hot spots on our roadways,” the TxDOT Austin District shared on social media Monday morning. “Patches of ice and black ice across our area. It’s best not to travel this morning.”…
