Icy Weekend For Some in the CSRA: Winter Weather Creates Travel Hazards and Power Concerns

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – A significant winter weather event blanketed northern parts of the Central Savannah River Area over the weekend, creating hazardous driving conditions and leaving some without power.

The ice event that gripped the CSRA this weekend was a setup where warm air aloft meets a dense wedge of cold air at the surface, creating freezing rain that falls onto frozen ground and roads.

The ice storm’s impact was not uniform across the CSRA. A sharp divide emerged between the hardest-hit northern counties and less-affected southern areas. Those North of I-20 generally saw more ice and impacts to travel.
