Florida man pleads guilty to $52 million Medicare fraud scheme

MIAMI, Florida — A 38-year-old man from Lake Worth, Florida, has admitted to defrauding Medicare of over $52 million through false claims for unnecessary genetic testing. Sean Alterman pleaded guilty on January 15 to conspiracy charges related to health care fraud and kickbacks.

Alterman owned and operated two laboratories, Live Beyond Medical MGMT, LLC and Dynix Diagnostics LLC, through which he orchestrated the scheme, according to court documents. He purchased doctors’ orders for costly genetic tests from patient recruiters who used deceptive telemarketing to target Medicare beneficiaries. The recruiters employed a tactic known as “doctor chasing,” sending misleading prescription requests to physicians to secure their signatures on tests that patients did not require.

The fraudulent claims resulted in Medicare paying approximately $36 million, with Alterman personally profiting around $5.5 million, much of which was funneled through shell companies Shivv LLC and Shank LLC.
