At 100 years old, retired NSU professor has homework assignment for nation’s journalists

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — One hundred years ago Monday, something in the shape of a box was unveiled for all the world to see. It was called television. That same day, Grady James was born in Ocala, Florida. He grew up to serve two years in the Army and, after earning advanced degrees, he would go to play a major role in training television professionals employed by the nation’s major broadcast companies.

10 On Your Side’s Regina Mobley shared with colleagues that she would not be in the news business today if it were not for the training provided by Norfolk State University mass communications professor Dr. Grady James in the early 1980s.

On his 100th birthday, James visited WAVY-TV 10, where he offered a lesson on the role of journalists in the past and the challenges of reporting with accuracy in today’s media ecosystem.
