A 67-year-old hiker survived a steep fall into a ravine in the dark and was lost for almost 12 hours before he was discovered by a 40-person search and rescue team.

“I’m just happy to be back home with my wife and family and friends,” Grant Gunderson, an investor from Granite Bay, Calif., tells PEOPLE via email of losing his way while hiking Mount Tamalpais in Marin County on Oct. 31.
