CU throttled some thermostats to save energy during extreme cold

SPRINGFIELD, MO – Some City Utilities of Springfield customers had a slightly chillier morning after their thermostats were temporarily throttled down.  But the drop didn’t come as a surprise to them.

The scheduled drop was part of the voluntary CU Peak Rewards program for customers who have smart Wi-Fi-connected thermostats like Nest or ecobee.  Homeowners who install the devices can qualify for rebates. In exchange, users agree to give CU permission to remotely control the devices during times of peak energy usage.

CU says Monday was the first time it has ever implemented the reduction for the roughly 2,000 customers currently participating in the program…
