ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s an idea that’s failed before in the city council, but a group of councilors hopes this time, they can enact restrictions on short-term rentals. The proposal would prohibit a home from getting permitted as a short-term rental if it’s too close to another one.
“The majority of short-term rentals are concentrated in specific parts of town, predominantly our historic neighborhoods. Neighborhoods with a majority of people of color,” said Albuquerque City Councilor Joaquín Baca.
After similar proposals have failed in council in recent years, city councilors, including Baca, are trying once again to limit the concentration of short-term rentals. The bill would prohibit new permits within 330 feet of another property that is rented out on websites like VRBO or Airbnb.
