HALETHORPE, MD—A major hazmat incident has brought traffic to a standstill on the Baltimore Beltway this morning after a tanker truck carrying thousands of gallons of fuel overturned near Halethorpe.
According to the Baltimore County Fire Department, the accident occurred at just after 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning on I-695 at Washington Boulevard. The tanker was loaded with approximately 7,000 gallons of a gasoline and diesel mixture. Emergency crews arriving on the scene confirmed an active fuel leak, prompting an immediate and large-scale response.
Emergency Response and Containment
Firefighters have initiated foam operations to suppress flammable vapors and mitigate the risk of ignition. Due to the volume of fuel involved and the environmental risks, the Baltimore County HazMat team and the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) are currently on-site managing the spill.
Despite the severity of the rollover, officials reported at 10:34 a.m. that no injuries have been documented at this time.
