PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – A student at Churchland Middle School was found in possession of a gun while on campus Tuesday afternoon, prompting an ongoing investigation led by the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office.
Principal Khrista Brownlee informed parents and guardians about the incident, confirming that the school administration was alerted earlier in the afternoon that a student had a gun on school grounds. Following established protocols, Brownlee said the student was identified, searched, and the weapon was confiscated. The student is in custody, facing criminal charges.
WAVY reached out to the school district to confirm if Churchland Middle School utilizes metal detectors. A spokesperson said the school does have a weapons detection system and said it was in use Tuesday.
