Shaker Heights adopts program to improve traffic stop safety for vulnerable drivers

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH — Shaker Heights police will adopt the Ohio Blue Envelope program, a statewide initiative designed to improve communication and safety during traffic stops for individuals with autism, dementia, anxiety or other communication challenges.

Police Chief Wayne Hudson explained the program’s purpose and implementation of the program at Monday’s city council meeting.

“Traffic stops can be stressful for anyone. But for individuals with autism, dementia, anxiety or other communication challenges, that stress can quickly become overwhelming,” Hudson said. “The Blue Envelope program is designed to help bridge the gap calmly, respectfully and safely.”…
