GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Mary Elizabeth Hurtak, 34, was arrested last night and charged with burglary, utility theft, and property damage after allegedly squatting in a vacant home for several weeks and damaging the plumbing; she reportedly claimed to be a police officer from Miami and provided a false name.
At about 10 p.m. on January 26, a Gainesville Police Department officer responded to the Porters Quarters neighborhood, where a witness said a vacant home had been broken into. The officer reported that all the lights were on inside the home, and Hurtak could be seen through the home’s windows; when Hurtak saw the officer, she came to the door…
