Coopersville Surpasses Snow Day Limit in Michigan

Most Michigan school districts are allowed six snow days per year, and at least one West Michigan school has already surpassed the allotted amount.

Things to So on a School Snow Day

One of my favorite things to do on a snow day was to build a snow fort (an igloo). Since my dad worked at night, I would shovel the snow but do so into one pile to build my snow palace.

Building a snowman was another go-to as a kid on a snow day. Sometimes my friends and I would make multiple snowmen. Plus, there would be a few snow balls thrown along the way.

Sledding with my sister and/or my friends was a big deal on a snow day. As long as the temperature wasn’t in single digits, you better believe we were dragging our sleds to the nearest steep hill for a thrill.

Certainly snowboard, skiing, and tubing at an area ski lodge are great options but not every kid has that kind of money. Although as a kid, I used to shovel driveways on snow days to get enough money to go skiing.

When I was growing up in Southeast Michigan, a snow day was very rare since the threshold for calling a snow day was a foot of snow or better.

Coopersville Hits More Snow Days Than Allowed

Coopersville, Michigan, has already used up its six allotted snow days. The school system is now at seven, and recently made a statement that went out on the districts Facebook page.

Now that Coopersville has taken seven snow days, they are applying for a waiver that provides districts with three additional snow days. School Superintendent Matt Spencer said, “We are exploring options related to adding minutes to our remaining school days and/or adding days to the end of the school year.”
