Long‑Stalled 9th Ward Stadium Finally Gets Green Light From School Board

After years of delays and false starts, the Orleans Parish School Board on Tuesday signed off on the long‑planned 9th Ward Stadium, clearing the way for construction on land next to George Washington Carver High School. Supporters say the move is a crucial step toward finally giving eastern New Orleans a true home field for public‑school athletics.

In a Facebook post, WVUE | FOX 8 shared video from the meeting along with coverage of the vote. The board’s publicly posted minutes show that members approved a subrecipient agreement with the City of New Orleans to receive $2,500,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funding for the stadium, according to the Orleans Parish School Board minutes.

Where Bids Are Open and What Land Is in Play

The school board has issued an invitation for bids for a Multi‑Sport Venue in Eastern New Orleans and Lower Ninth Ward, listing the project site as 4290 Almonaster Avenue. The solicitation opened earlier this month, a pre‑bid conference was held last Wednesday, and bids are due on Thursday next week, according to Bidbanana. The solicitation notes that bidders must meet Louisiana licensing and bonding requirements and that bid documents are available through the listed planroom.

What Backers Say Is Coming

Project organizers say the first phase calls for an artificial‑turf football field, a grandstand with roughly 3,700 seats, a press box, restrooms, concessions and parking, with the facility operated by New Orleans Public Schools. 9th Ward Stadium Inc. lists an estimated $12 million project cost and reports that about $10 million has already been raised through federal earmarks, state capital outlay and city support, with additional private fundraising planned…
