Portage County Sheriff’s Office issues alert concerning scam calls

The Portage County Sheriff’s Office says residents recently have reported someone claiming to be personnel from the sheriff’s office calling to demand payment in connection with arrest warrants or court fines.

The sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post that law enforcement officers do not call people demanding payment for fines via cash, gift cards, cryptocurrency, a payment app or wire transfer “and never as a way to buy your way out of a ‘crime.'”

“Thankfully, our citizens are smart enough to not fall for it, and we appreciate those who’ve reported these recent scam calls,” the sheriff’s office posted…
