Rabid Raccoon confirmed on Johns Island

JOHNS ISLAND (S.C) — A raccoon found near Kemway and Burden Creek roads on Johns Island has tested positive for rabies, the South Carolina Department of Public Health said Monday.

One dog was exposed and will be quarantined in accordance with the South Carolina Rabies Control Act, officials said. No human exposures have been identified.

Rabies is most often detected in wild animals such as raccoons, skunks, foxes, and bats in South Carolina, officials say, but domestic pets can contract the virus just as easily. Residents are advised not to touch animals that appear to be injured or in distress and instead contact trained professionals, such as animal control or wildlife rehabilitators…
