One area is introducing new legislation surrounding the self-checkout as theft at the scanners seems to be on the rise.
Costa Mesa, in Orange County, California, is aiming to implement a new rule requiring more staffing at the self-checkout lanes in local stores. The local ordinance was approved in its first reading, and it will need one more reading to go into effect.
The legislation is modeled after similar rules in nearby Long Beach. The goal is to increase how quickly customers get through the checkout, as well as reduce the likelihood of theft. That can’t come at a better time, as a new report suggests stealing at the self-checkout may be on the rise…
