After a winter storm left blankets of snow and ice across the South, including the Upstate, organizations in the area opened their doors to people during the storm and remain open as the cold weather persists.
The National Weather Service issued an ice storm warning for Upstate South Carolina on Friday, Jan. 23, effective at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, through 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26. Power outages from the storm that covered the Upstate in freezing rain, sleet, and snow affected more than 30,000 utility customers on Monday, Jan. 26.
The shelters are being operated by non-profit organizations, county, and city officials.
