NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – It can be hard to stay warm this time of year. Luckily, there’s plenty of hearty meals designed to warm up from within. KRQE asked viewers via social media what their favorite comfort foods were when the temperature drops.
Soups and stews are the most popular comfort foods when the weather gets rough. Viewers had many favorites to share, from green chile stew to posole, tomato soup to caldo de pollo, split pea soup to seafood soup, and bean soup to vegetable and beef stew. There’s nothing like a piping-hot bowl of spicy, flavorful stew to get anyone through the bitter cold. One viewer doesn’t discriminate when it comes to stews, preferring “almost anything cooked in the crockpot…split pea soup with ham, posole, pot roast with carrots and potatoes, bean soup, carne adovada, etc.”
Poll: What is your seasonal comfort food?
For many New Mexicans, other popular comfort foods are very protein heavy. Steak, carne adovada, beans, beef jerky, chili, and pot roast are just some of the comforts KRQE viewers rely on in freezing temps. Research has shown that protein can, in fact, generate a little extra heat in the body through a process called thermogenesis.
Of course, it wouldn’t be New Mexican without chile. Several viewers tend to make any food fit for winter by topping it with green chile. From stews to enchiladas, a little extra spice never hurts. One viewer, who just moved to Albuquerque from Tennessee, said, “Tonight I made green chile chicken enchiladas to try to keep warm. The cold has been brutal.”…
