State of Oregon settles lawsuit for $2.3M after corrections officer encouraged inmate’s suicide

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Oregon Department of Corrections will pay $2.3 million to settle a lawsuit filed by the family of a 22-year-old who died by suicide inside a black box solitary cell. The agreement was reached on Jan. 21.

Grayson Painter was arrested multiple times in Washington County between 2020 and 2022. In the most recent cases, both from September 2022, he was charged with assaulting a public safety officer, first-degree criminal mischief and second-degree criminal mischief.
