Niagara Falls partially frozen after sub-zero temperatures

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The cascading waters at Niagara Falls are encased in layers of ice after the sub-zero temperatures and winter storm that swept through the country over the weekend.

Although the Canadian falls appear completely frozen, Niagara Parks said water continues to flow underneath a shell of ice and frozen mist on the surface. A complete freeze is near impossible, with the exception of one instance recorded in 1848.

According to Niagara Parks, the frozen falls completely stopped water flow for about 30 hours. Visitors walked over an ice bridge that had formed beneath the falls along the Niagara River to observe the natural phenomenon, a practice that would be too risky to attempt today…
