HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Officials say crews from neighboring counties are responding to assist Christian and Muhlenberg County road crews as Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) employees work to remove significant ice accumulations from state highways.
The KYTC says during last weekend’s winter storm, a line of ice tracked across southern Christian County into Muhlenberg County, leaving areas with challenging conditions. In some locations, crews are reporting up to three inches of ice frozen road surfaces. Unlike neighboring counties that received measurable snowfall before the ice event, much of the precipitation in the Christian and Muhlenberg areas froze directly on the pavement. This has made it more difficult to treat roadways, as traditional salt applications are less effective when applied directly to the ice.

According to the KYTC, to address these conditions, crews are applying a combination of road salt and salt brine to break the ice’s bond with the pavement and improve traction for motorists. Additional resources from surrounding counties are working alongside KYTC crews from Christian and Muhlenberg to expedite removal efforts and improve roadway safety. Crews from five counties are in Muhlenberg County, and crews from four are in Christian County. Assistance from neighboring KYTC districts is also being requested. Contract graders have been deployed in both counties since the beginning of the event.
