State oversight subcommittee takes a closer look at data centers

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – More and more data center projects are popping up across Michigan, and it’s forcing state lawmakers to dig deeper into their impacts.

At least eight projects are currently being planned in communities across the state, including in Lansing. The Michigan House of Representatives Corporate Subsidies and State Investments subcommittee had the first of several hearings Wednesday to learn more.

Lawmakers heard presentations on energy usage and artificial intelligence from two members of the Heartland Institute, a conservative think tank that focuses on free markets. Even they felt that some regulation is needed when it comes to data centers…
