Residents voice concerns over proposed Horry Co. landfill expansion

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — Residents gathered at the Horry County Solid Waste Authority meeting to express their concerns about a proposed landfill expansion that would cover more than 400 acres and impact over 100 acres of wetlands around Sterritt Swamp.

Despite the public’s interest, the board did not address the topic, leading to many attendees leaving the meeting.

Jim Irvin, a concerned resident, highlighted potential long-term contamination issues, saying, “All these places are going to get affected by it, it may not be within five years, and it might be ten- fifteen years from now. Stuff that my kids- my grandkids are going to have to deal with.”…
