City Council Passes Controversial Alcohol Rezoning

One local sports facility that primarily caters to youth sports is one step closer to being able to serve alcohol following a vote by the Amarillo City Council.

On Tuesday, the City Council voted 3-2 to approve a rezoning package for the Netplex, a facility that hosts a variety of youth and adult sports programs. The rezoning package will allow the Netplex to sell alcohol that can be consumed on or off premise. Mayor Cole Stanley and City Councilman Tim Reid were the two members who voted against the proposal.

The item garnered significant controversy due to the facility’s focus on youth sports and its proximity to a nearby daycare. Several citizens spoke in opposition to the proposal, while representatives for the Netplex explained that not every event will feature alcohol sales.
