Rush-hour crash on major Texas highway causes hour-long delays

Traffic is stalled along one of Central Texas’ primary east-west highway corridors after a crash was reported along the roadway.

A SigAlert notice reported just after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28, confirmed a crash happened near the Eastbound State Hwy. 71 and Ben White Boulevard with Montopolis Drive in Southeast Austin. The crash has resulted in two lanes of traffic being blocked, with stop-and-go traffic and expected delays up to one hour, according to the SigAlert.

Traffic cameras from the City of Austin highlighted the aftermath of the crash, with emergency crews and cones separating the blocked traffic lanes. No updates as to the cause of the crash or any injuries involved have been reported by the city of Austin’s Transportation and Public Works Department as of 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.

As of 4:50 p.m., the crash has clogged traffic along the east-west corridor from the crash site near the Montopolis Drive intersection all the way toward South Lamar Boulevard and Loop 360, near the interchange with MoPac. The crash site sits just east of the highly trafficked interchange with Interstate 35, which is already showing heightened congestion volumes in both northbound and southbound lanes as Central Texans begin their evening commutes…
