Hawaii man sentenced after $1.8M fraud scheme left 79-year-old homeless

SANTA ANA, California (Island News) – A Hawaii man was sentenced to four years in federal prison for defrauding a 79-year-old Orange County resident out of nearly $2 million.

John Tamahere McCabe, 42, from Kailua, Hawaii, was sentenced on Wednesday and was ordered to pay $1,814,000 in restitution. It was reported that McCabe defrauded the 79-year-old of nearly $2 million via false promises to broker the sale of the victim’s yacht and taking out unauthorized loans against the victim’s Irvine condo, which left the victim homeless.

From July 2017 to January 2024, McCabe devised and executed a scheme to defraud the 79-year-old victim. Officials reported that McCabe offered to help the victim sell his yacht and promised to transfer the sale’s proceeds to the victim. However, the victim didn’t know that McCabe used fabricated documents to change the ownership of the yacht to McCabe’s name.

Once the yacht was in McCabe’s name he then diverted the proceeds to his own personal bank account and used most of the proceeds for his own personal purposes…
