Fog a factor in 43-vehicle crash on Hwy. 58 near Bakersfield

(FOX40.COM) — Fog was likely a factor in the 43-vehicle pileup on Highway 58 near Bakersfield that sent several people to area hospitals, the California Highway Patrol said.

The incident, which happened around 8 a.m., just east of Towerline Road on Tuesday, triggered a mass-casualty response by local emergency personnel. Nine people were transported to four hospitals, with injuries ranging from major to minor.

Investigators believe the weather may have been a contributing factor, CHP officers announced. Witnesses reported “extremely dense fog” with visibility estimated between 50 and 60 feet.
