Shanquella Robinson’s wrongful death lawsuit headed back to Mecklenburg County Court

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A federal judge has sent part of a civil lawsuit connected to the death of Charlotte woman Shanquella Robinson back to Mecklenburg County Superior Court, ruling that federal court no longer has jurisdiction over the case.

The judge ordered the case remanded after determining that only state-law claims remain against the individual defendants who traveled with Robinson to Mexico, where she died in 2022. The Tuesday ruling follows the court’s earlier dismissal of all federal claims against the FBI and the U.S. State Department.

The lawsuit was originally filed in Mecklenburg County in October 2024 by Robinson’s mother, Sallamondra Robinson.
