LEXINGTON, Ky. — Most of us take our eyesight for granted. But retina emergencies are more common than people realize and often require immediate surgery to save patients’ vision.
Physicians like me are called when people have a potentially life-altering eye problem like a detached retina. Every minute matters in such an emergency and delays can lead to impaired vision or blindness. Everyone in our state should have access to prompt eye surgery when it matters most. Unfortunately, this isn’t guaranteed, and it’s not for reasons you might think.
