Coventry woman charged with animal cruelty takes plea deal

COVENTRY, R.I. (WPRI) — The Coventry woman charged with animal cruelty after an emaciated German Shepherd was discovered in her home has accepted a plea deal.

Court records indicate 25-year-old Caitlyn Pelton pleaded no contest Wednesday to unnecessary cruelty to animals for failing to provide her dog with adequate food or water.

Pelton received a one-year filing, which means the case could be expunged if she stays out of trouble for the next 12 months. She was also ordered to complete 50 hours of community service and pay restitution to Coventry Animal Control.

Pelton is prohibited from owning pets in the future as well.
