SF official warns of ‘very busy’ downtown streets for 11 days

Levi’s Stadium is over 40 miles from downtown San Francisco, but that doesn’t mean the city isn’t the official doorstep to the Super Bowl. The event is on Feb. 8, but starting Friday, several blocks downtown along with streets in two other San Francisco neighborhoods are closing to traffic for Super Bowl-related events.

City officials are actively warning locals and visitors to take public transit and avoid driving if they can, especially when passing by several major areas downtown. “Just another reminder that downtown especially is gonna be very busy with street closures and some transit reroutes,” Mary Ellen Carroll, the executive director of the city’s Department of Emergency Management, said during a news conference on Monday.

Streets near or around the Civic Center, Grace Cathedral, the Ferry Building and the former Hibernia Bank Building, which is now an event space, are closing. Elsewhere, the Palace of Fine Arts in the Marina District and the Pearl venue in Dogpatch are both hosting events and experiencing some street closures…
