First-time visitors to New York City paid nearly 12 times the normal fare for an airport taxi ride after falling victim to unlicensed drivers who continue to operate at John F. Kennedy International Airport despite increased enforcement efforts, Gothamist reported.
Tabitha Abed and her husband, Abed Mulee, traveled from Kenya and paid $800 for transportation from JFK to Times Square, a trip that typically costs about $70 in a licensed yellow cab.
The couple encountered a man posing as a legitimate driver in the international arrivals area who later became aggressive and locked the car doors while demanding payment that included a made-up $180 charge for crossing the Queensboro Bridge, the report said…
