City of New Orleans ramping up parking enforcement to close budget gap

NEW ORLEANS — If you’ve been ignoring those orange parking tickets on your windshield, city leaders say now might be the time to take a closer look before that orange paper turns into an orange boot. City officials are ramping up parking enforcement as part of a broader strategy to address a major budget shortfall. Chief Administrative Officer Joe Giarrusso says the city expects to generate about $7 million through increased parking enforcement efforts.

“We’re already getting people who are saying ‘I don’t understand why I got booted’,” Giarrusso said. “Well sir or ma’am you have $5,000 in outstanding tickets.”

The plan includes hiring 50 new parking enforcement officers and shifting enforcement responsibilities from the Department of Public Works to the New Orleans Police Department…
