The latest forecasts from the National Weather Service (NWS) are increasing the odds for Northeast Georgia to receive accumulating snowfall this weekend.
The forecast from the NWS in Peachtree City Thursday afternoon, Jan. 29, shows areas from Blairsville to Gainesville to Athens could receive anywhere from three to four inches of snow from late Friday night through Saturday. The weather service earlier in the day had already placed the region under a Winter Storm Watch for this weekend.
“The Winter Storm Watch has been expanded to as far west as the Atlanta metro area, and will be in effect from Friday evening through Sunday morning,” the NWS’s Thursday afternoon statement said. “Below freezing ground temperatures will allow snow to instantly stick on roads.”
The snowfall is expected to be accompanied by strong winds, with gusts up to 35 miles per hour, and be followed by frigid temperatures, with an Extreme Cold Watch being in effect for all of North Georgia from Saturday through Sunday night.
