Clark Co. Sheriff tries to fire longtime Sgt. in merit board hearing

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. — The five members of the Clark County Sheriff’s Office merit board heard testimony Thursday on whether or not to fire Sgt. Tom Higdon. Sheriff Scottie Maples has accused Higdon of not being fit to be a sergeant in his department anymore.

The main accusation for firing Higdon is an incident from August 24, 2025. Two deputies were responding to a mental health call where the family said their son was off his medication and was afraid of him. Two deputies began to follow the subject into the woods behind their house while Sgt. Higdon was a distance behind them.

One of the deputies said, “Last warning, you’re gonna get tased if you keep going.” The subject kept walking and the officer tased him. Two officers were trying to restrain the subject, and they tased him again because they said he would not give up his second hand…
