Alabama prison inmates often kept from addiction rehab programs

Legislators told an Alabama Department of Corrections official Wednesday that they were concerned by reports that inmates were not getting access to rehabilitation programs in a timely manner.

Members of the Joint Prison Oversight Committee told M. Stanford Robinson, who oversees education, programs and reentry for ADOC, on Wednesday, that those delays were keeping people in prison for longer times or leading to inmates being released without receiving court-ordered treatment.

“Some people are saying, ‘I would rather be sentenced to two or three years on a split sentence instead of a split with substance abuse training because I do not know if I would ever get out of substance abuse training because I do not know if I would ever get into substance abuse training,’” said Rep.
