Southeast Alabama placed under an extreme cold watch Saturday and Sunday – wind chills falling to 5

On Thursday at 9:09 a.m. an extreme cold watch was released by the National Weather Service valid from Saturday noon until Sunday noon for Coffee, Dale, Henry, Geneva and Houston counties.

The weather service adds, “Dangerously cold wind chills between 5 and 15 degrees possible.”

“Frostbite and hypothermia could occur in as little as 30 minutes if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. An extended period of freezing temperatures could cause exposed water pipes to rupture,” adds the weather service. “Wear protective clothing such as a hat, facemask, and heavy gloves or mittens if you have plans to be outdoors. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Keep pets indoors as much as possible. Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside. Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates.”
