Bill aims to address ‘benefits cliff’ for subsidized child care

Access to subsidized child care for her two children was a lifeline for Brittany Riddle and her husband, allowing them both to work to support their family rather than have to be stay-at-home parents.

A few years ago, Riddle’s kids started attending school at the Rainbow Riders Child Care Center in Blacksburg. When they first started attending classes there, Riddle wasn’t paying much because she didn’t have a job at the time.

But gradually, both Riddle and her husband started to earn more money. She began to pay more for the children’s care over time, and in late May, she got an email stating that her household made too much money to qualify for Virginia’s Child Care Subsidy Program at all…
