Life-Threatening Collision in Torrey Pines Involves Tractor-Trailer and Honda Civic; San Diego Authorities Investigate

According to an email press release from the San Diego Police Department, a serious collision occurred on North Torrey Pines Road at approximately 2:45 AM today. A 58-year-old male, maneuvering a 2021 Freightliner tractor-trailer, collided with a 2024 Honda Civic after the latter ran a red light. The Honda, driven by a 24-year-old woman, ended up wedged beneath the trailer. Officer D. O’Brien, the watch commander, released this synopsis of the incident, per the San Diego Police Department.

The collision took place near the Scripps Clinic’s driveway, in the Torrey Pines neighborhood. The tractor-trailer had been making a legally protected left turn when the Civic, traveling south in the number one lane, struck the truck’s rear broadside. First responders from S.D.F.D. had to extricate the woman from her crushed vehicle before transporting her to a nearby hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries. The truck driver remained unharmed. It’s currently unknown if DUI was a factor for the Honda driver.

The SDPD Traffic Division is currently investigating the collision. While the severity of the crash highlights the ongoing concerns for road safety in high-speed areas, the officials have not released any further details about the possible cause or any contributing factors beyond the initial report of the red light being run.
