Albany hiker, dog get lost in High Peaks amid snow squalls

KEENE — Forest rangers were called to the state’s 12th-tallest mountain last week to rescue a hiker from Albany who brought their dog on a hike and lost the trail.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation dispatch in Ray Brook got a call about the lost 47-year-old hiker on Giant Mountain just after 5 p.m. on Jan. 22, a day when the National Weather Service in Burlington, Vt., had warned of a lake effect snow band that had the potential to sharply reduce visibility “due to both falling and blowing snow, and a rapid accumulation of snow.”
